The Ultimate International Packing List (Plus Free PDF)

Packing for an International Trip Doesn’t Have to Be Stressful

We’ve all experienced that sinking feeling on the airplane when you suddenly realize you left your universal power adapter or favorite sunglasses on the kitchen counter. Packing for an international trip requires more thought than a weekend getaway, but with the right checklist, you can pack efficiently and with peace of mind.

Below is our master checklist for international travel.

1. The Absolute Essentials (Carry-On)

If your checked bag gets lost, these are the items you must have with you.

  • Passport & Visa: Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months past your return date.
  • Credit Cards & Cash: Bring at least two cards with no foreign transaction fees. (Need to know exchange rates? Use our Currency Converter).
  • Travel Insurance Documents: Have digital and physical copies.
  • Medications: In their original prescription bottles.
  • Universal Power Adapter: Essential for charging devices on arrival.

2. Electronics & Tech

  • Smartphone & Charger
  • Power Bank (An absolute must for long days of navigating).
  • E-Reader or Tablet (pre-loaded with books/movies).
  • Noise-canceling headphones.

3. Clothing (The “Rule of 3”)

To avoid overpacking, follow the rule of three: wear one, wash one, dry one.

  • 3-4 breathable t-shirts or tops.
  • 1-2 pairs of comfortable walking pants/shorts.
  • 1 light jacket or sweater (even in summer, airplanes get cold).
  • 1 nicer outfit for dinners.
  • 4-5 pairs of socks and underwear.
  • Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes.
  • A swimsuit.

4. Toiletries (TSA Compliant)

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss.
  • Deodorant.
  • Sunscreen (buy reef-safe if going to the ocean).
  • Lip balm (airplanes are incredibly dry).
  • Basic first aid (band-aids, pain relievers, motion sickness pills).

The Golden Rule: Roll, Don’t Fold

To maximize space in your suitcase, roll your clothes tightly instead of folding them. This also helps prevent deep wrinkles. Consider investing in packing cubes, which will change your life by keeping your bag organized.
